Giovanni Battista Pergolesi: Stabat Mater; Anton Nani: Responsori per il Giovedì Santo

Miriam Gauci soprano, Claire Massa alto, Christopher Busietta tenor, Alfred Camilleri baritone, Albert Buttigieg bass; Goldberg Ensemble; Malta Philharmonic Orchestra; Michael Laus conductor

Two music masterpieces for the Lenten season: the evening will start with Pergolesi’s immortal setting of the Stabat Mater; this will be followed by a collection of psalms and responsorials composed in the nineteenth century by one of Malta’s foremost composers, Anton Nani. Composed for performance in church on the night between Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, and based on extracts from the Book of Psalms and from the gospel accounts of the Passion, Nani’s work is dark, dramatic and theatrical in nature.
