Sergei Rachmaninoff – Piano Concerto No. 1, Op. 1
Richard Strauss – Ein Heldenleben, Op. 40
Richard Strauss is particularly renowned for his epic tone poems, and none are more epic than his Ein Heldenleben, a musical depiction of the life and works of a hero which is typically interpreted as being autobiographical in nature. The work is written for a huge orchestra – on this occasion, the MPO will be joined by musicians from the State Youth Orchestra of Armenia – and is arguably Strauss’ most technically demanding orchestral work.
Under the direction of Dutch-Maltese conductor Lawrence Renes, the orchestra will also be joined by Latvian pianist Inese Klotina for a performance of Rachmaninoff’s First Piano Concerto. Written when Rachmaninoff was just eighteen but later extensively revised, it showcases both his youthful freshness as well as his subsequent development into a mature and brilliant composer.
